Text Box: Hypnotherapy for Insomnia and Sleep Issues

It has been estimated that approximately 30% of the adult population complains of insomnia at any one time. For a third of these it is a chronic problem.

Insomnia is divided into three distinct types:

Transient insomnia - insomnia of short duration usually as a response to stress, jet lag or bereavement.

Secondary insomnia - insomnia that is secondary to another disorder such as depression, pain, drug abuse, anxiety disorders etc

Primary insomnia - insomnia where the cause is unknown.

Insomnia is experienced either as initial insomnia (difficulty in initiating sleep when first going to bed, maintenance insomnia, where the patient awakes during the night and has difficulty in returning to sleep, early awakening insomnia, early awakening and being unable to return to sleep often with pessimistic thought patterns.

The law of reversed effect applies to nearly all insomniacs. They will try to force sleep, however the harder they try to do so, the more awake they become.

Hypnotherapeutic interventions has been shown to be very useful in assisting with insomnia. Basic case can be helped with direct suggestion therapy and self hypnosis, whereas more complex cases may benefit more successfully from Hypno-CBT or analytical hypnotherapy approaches.

Text Box: Parasomnia, Nightmares and Night Terrors

The term parasomnia covers a number of sleep disorders that occur during non-REM sleep, such as night terrors, sleepwalking and nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting) amongst other things.

Night terrors are not nightmares, they are often associated with emotional stress and are therefore particularly suited for hypnotherapy treatment.

Sleep walking and nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting) usually respond well to hypnotherapy. The approach would vary depending upon the severity of the condition and the patient.

Hypnotherapy can be used to help banish nightmares on even give the patient the ability to change them into pleasant dreams.

Hypnotherapy can be useful in invoking, controlling and interpreting lucid dreams. A patient can be taught using hypnosis to interpret dreams using techniques such as ‘The Dream Oracle’ devised by the psychologists Dr Keith Hearne and Dr David Melbourne. Somatic dreams can also be explored and interpreted, these are dreams that anticipate illness.

Sleep paralysis causes all of the voluntary muscle groups to become paralysed and can be particularly frightening. It is thought to be the body’s way of preventing physical actions in response to dream images. It can last sometimes briefly after awakening. Hypnosis can assist the patient in accepting this or controlling it without fear.

Sleep myoclonus is the experience of awakening from sleep with a jerk (myoclonic spasm) caused by the spontaneous contraction of muscle groups. Again hypnotherapy may be useful in assisting patients experiencing these symptoms.
